The grapefruit diet is far from being a new weight loss method. Even legendary Margaret Thatcher used to follow it. So how can this fruit help to lose weight and what to do to follow this diet?
EAT GRAPEFRUIT THE RIGHT WAY
When buying grapefruit for dieting remember that it is best to choose grapefruit having unattractive skin with green and brown spots; never buy fruit with glossy skin. Also, it is important to find grapefruit that is not too hard but also not too soft (poking it should not leave any marks).
Remember to carefully wash grapefruit before eating. Try to eat it avoiding white layer around red flesh since this partition helps to prevent cardiovascular diseases but is too bitter for regular consumption. Buy a special grapefruit spoon to make it easier to eat the flesh.

If you find it difficult to eat plain grapefruit, try to add some brown sugar, honey or sugar powder occasionally. To spice thing up, try grilled grapefruit: simply bake the grapefruit slices. Also, remember to drink a lot of plain non-carbonated water while dieting. Salt and sugar are forbidden.
PROS AND CONS OF THE GRAPEFRUIT DIET
Grapefruit is a healthy and low-calorie product: there is just 32 kcal in 100 g of this fruit. However, remember that you can eat only grapefruit for 3 days at most; then you must start adding high-protein food to your menu. This kind of citrus can slow down liver functioning, so take hepatoprotectors while dieting.
The advantages of the grapefruit diet:
- you burn stored fat very quickly (especially if you do sports while dieting),
- you do not feel hungry,
- grapefruit can increase the acidity of the stomach.
Remember that the grapefruit diet is only for people who eat this citrus since childhood. But if you are allergic to this fruit, better choose some other diet. This eating plan is also not for pregnant and lactating women or people with liver or kidney disorders. Consult a doctor before taking up the grapefruit diet.

The classic version of this diet includes 2 stages. The first stage lasts for a week and the second, for 10 to 90 days.
